How Culture Shapes Personality: A Preliminary Study
My name is Amy Wong, and I am a
doctoral student in clinical psychology at Pepperdine University,
Graduate School of Education and Psychology. I am working on my
dissertation, which is supervised by Joy Asamen, Ph.D., Professor
of Psychology.
There are research findings that
demonstrate how particular personality traits are more common in some
cultures than others, and for some cultural groups, acculturation might
be related to the findings. Hence, the purpose
of this study is to further examine these observations.
To participate in the study, you must be:
- At least 18 years old
- A student in either a community college or college/university
- Identify as Mexican American, Chinese American, or Caucasian American
- Able to read English
- Have access to email
If you decide to participate in
the study, it will involve the completion of questionnaires that should
take no more than 20-25 minutes to complete. The questionnaires ask for:
- Background information about you
- Information about your cultural customs, beliefs, and behaviors
- Information about how you view yourself, others, and your cultural groups
- Information about the degree to which particular personality traits describe you.
Those who return the questionnaires may enter a drawing for a $50 Best Buy e-gift card.
If you are interested in finding
out more about the project, have questions, or are interested in
participating in the study, you may contact me at
hingmanamy.wong@pepperdine.edu. If you are interested in participating in the study, please indicate the group with which you identify – Chinese American,
Mexican American, or Caucasian.

Research: nominating qualified supervisor for Asian international counseling trainees
Dear international students,
My name is Yi Chen Wu. I
would appreciate your help with my doctoral dissertation research
titled “Factors contributing to cultural discussions with Asian
international counseling trainees: cognitive style, theoretical
orientation, supervisory style, multicultural competency, and
acculturation” which is being conducted under the direction of Dr.
Edward Delgado-Romero, Human Development and Counseling Services,

factors that contribute to positive relationships between Asian
international trainees and their clinical supervisors.
I would like to invite Asian international trainees in APA-accredited counseling psychology doctoral programs to participate in this research project, including nominating a clinical supervisors as the best qualified supervisor for Asian international counseling trainees. This supervisor has to have provided supervision to him/her for at least threemonths.
The supervisor will be informed that they were nominated by one of
their Asian international trainees and invited to participate in the
study. After the survey, trainee’s information will be matched with
supervisor’s information. However, both student and supervisor will not
have access to the other’s result. Any individually identifiable
information about participants will be kept confidential.
If
you choose to participate, you will be asked to complete an online
survey via Survey Quizmo which will take approximately 25-50 minutes to
complete.By completing this survey and sharing your
experiences of clinical training, you will be able to contribute to
multicultural supervision literature and help supervisors provide more
effective training for Asian international counseling students.
Please
see below for the links to the trainee survey. When you click on link
you will be presented with an introduction to the survey and informed
consent. If you understand the procedures and agree to
participate, you will be instructed to click the “I agree” button and
